The verbs you use on your resume do more than describe your work. They signal confidence, ownership, and impact. Weak verbs like "was responsible for" or "was involved in" suggest you were a passive participant. Strong verbs tell the reader you drove results.

Why Action Verbs Matter

Consider these two bullet points describing the same work:

The first version uses four weak words, "Was responsible for managing", before getting to any meaningful content. The second leads with a strong verb and immediately communicates impact.

Some verbs have been used so often that they no longer carry meaning. Use them sparingly:

  • Results-oriented, Should be shown, not stated

How to Choose

For each bullet point on your resume, ask: "What was the most important thing I did here?" That's your verb. Don't start with "Responsible for" and work backward. Start with the action and build the sentence around it.

Your first word is the most important word in each bullet point. Make it earn that position.
